The rat escaped. We think his tail stopped the door from locking as it snapped shut. It is pretty feeble to be honest. The robin didn’t escape though. Not sure how long he’d been in there but he was freaked out. Don’t think he’ll come back to my garden. The rat though is tormenting me. And now he’s brought the whole family along.

Nicely made, trigger for door delightfully simple and works well. A bit doubtful about longevity outdoors in Lancashire climate. Has not caught anything yet .........

I've been delaying writing my review for this product, hoping to catch the rat I saw last week, but it seems to be quite an elusive little critter. Manufacturing Quality: The Ratkil Live Rat Cage Trap is constructed entirely of metal, finished in leaf green paint. Marketed as 'Heavy Duty', it does seem fairly strong, but it isn't as robust as my previous version of this trap, which I owned some years ago. That said, it's still quite adequate for the task, and only the most determined rat could gnaw through the metal mesh. Setting the trap: Setting the trap for the first time was a bit challenging, as the instructions weren't very clear. With the door of the trap in the open position, you need to set the trigger. I found this particularly tricky due to its sensitivity to vibration. For example, during normal operation, when a rat enters the trap and rests its weight on the feeding platform, the trigger activates and closes the trap door. However, the trigger mechanism can also be activated by vibrations caused by a rat climbing onto the trap. Similarly, when setting the trap, any slight movement of the cage can also trigger it. I think this trigger could have been designed differently so it's not affected by these false activations. Catching a rat: This is my preferred method for catching small rodents, as I dislike killing animals. It's just as easy to relocate a rat to the wild, where it's more likely to fall prey to predators. Unfortunately, as mentioned, I haven’t yet caught a rat, but these things often take time for the animals to become confident around the trap. Hopefully, once I do catch one, I can upload a video for my review. Until then, I only have a photo of the empty trap. Conclusion: This 'live catch' rat cage is well-made, despite the trigger issues I previously mentioned, and it should prove useful in controlling small rodent infestations. The listing states it's also suitable for squirrels, but due to the cage’s small size, I doubt you’ll catch a full-grown squirrel without trapping its tail in the door. Price-wise, I think the current selling price of £14.99 is reasonable, and if kept clean, I see no reason why it won't last a lifetime.

The traps are designed to be humane, harmless to small animals, and easy to use. The material is sturdy and suitable for outdoor use. However, their effectiveness in catching mice is average, perhaps more suitable for small mice; larger mice seem to have trouble getting inside. Cleaning is also a bit of a hassle. Suitable for homes with occasional small animals, but may not be suitable for serious rodent infestations.
