This is an effective rat trap, but does require a little thought to deploy it with the best chance of catching and killing a rat. I don't like having to kill anything but found it was necessary when a large rat kept coming into our back garden, as we have a new puppy that I don't want to get bitten by the rat should they meet. Plus the damage and disease problems associated with rats is not good. Other reviewers comment negatively on the fact the trap activates by the trigger being lifted rather than pressed down. This is not a problem if you use bait that you can impale on the barbs of the trigger. I used a small piece of a Snickers bar, impaling the bar into the caramel and peanut centre. Rats seem to love peanuts. If you use the trap in the winter you may need to warm the bait slightly to impale it on the bar so it sticks there. Some have said that the trap is not well made, but all I can say that in my case the trap has been set and unset many times before I caught the rat and the trap has not broken. I would definitely advise wearing strong 'rigger' type gloves when setting, unsetting or moving an armed trap. The spring is strong and the triangular spikes in the base of the trap will cause a nasty injury to bare skin. Likewise, great care should be taken to exclude children, pets or non-target species of birds/animals from the trap area when armed. After successful use of the trap and disposing of the rat, it is also a good idea to wash the trap with a bleach solution to kill germs and remove the dead rat smell which might otherwise put off future rats from being enticed into activating the trap. Before killing the rat (please see the enclosed photo to verify the trap is effective) I tried more modern metal and plastic type traps. They did not work but this old fashioned type metal trap did. Not nice, but it does work.

Too many short-cuts in manufacturing. The item has been stamped from sheet steel (a perfectly sensible way of producing something like this) but all of the edges had been left sharp; I acquired one cut finger just by taking the thing out of the box and acquired another cut finger while I was holding it and bemusedly trying to understand why there was blood dripping all over the place. Not a good start. The sharp edges were removed with a file. I'd recommend mounting it on a wooden board before trying to use it, because it is dangerous to handle otherwise. It does have a couple of pre-drilled holes for the screws. One bit of the mechanism fell out of its mounting posts on the second or third attempt to set the trap; it was easily replaced and then I slightly bent so that that part of the mechanism would be held securely henceforth. While experimenting with arming and releasing it, the kill bar came down with such force that it dislodged itself from its own mounting holes; this happened on the third "snap". It was repairable but a device that is falling apart on its third trigger-and-snap operation can hardly be praised. The spikes on the base plate don't seem like a good idea; They increase the danger to the human user, but if the spring is properly designed, the spikes shouldn't be necessary for killing the rat because the rat should be killed by getting its neck broken; not by being impaled. The mechanism operates by being pushed against, and this doesn't seem like something a rat would do if it was pulling at the bait. We shall see, I suppose.

ive never wrote a review but thought I would with this rat trap because it has just snapped a big fat rat right across the head the first night I put it out. I used a grape because it was quite secure on the bait spike so the rat couldn't just pull it off. I had already concreted around the perimeter of my back garden was th glass underneath to stop the digging then it moved to the front garden! The rats are because of a messy neighbour and going by the size of the one I just caught I think there will be more so I'm glad the traps are reusable. 5 stars would definitely recommend and the traps are easy to set. Bait them before you pull the snap back. Little update, I've caught loads of rats with theses now I just bleach and reuse. The spikes are the best as they go into the rats neck when the trap comes down.

Hello there. Roland rat speaking. At first I hated this device - I've lost a couple of great friends to it. However, we've warned each other about it and spread the word around - now none of us are getting caught any more. We have even found a way to flip it over so it goes off and then we can nick the bait - what a lovely bit o cheese!

Easy to set, easy to bate and it does the job as intended. It Kills all rats... dead, so to speak. Just be aware that what ever you bait it with will have other animals having at least a closer look. So place it with care and consideration to avoid a trip to the vets!

Unlike a conventional trap where the rodent has to press/push down on the bait to spring the trap, this one requires the bait to be lifted or pushed up. Peanut butter is taken regularly, I call to my wife, "I'm just popping outside to feed the rats, dear!" The trap has been sprung on a small number of occasions without catching anything. All that does is put them off for a couple of days, also every time it goes off the arm that locks on the bait holder gets bent, so I have to straighten it again. I've had increased results in the last few days since I forced a tough bit of gammon rind onto the end of the bait holder and then bent the two prongs vith pliers, one one way and one the other way, to hold the bait securely. Since then the trap has been sprung twice, while last night it was moved around 90 degrees without springing. Consequently, I am not convinced that this trap is any good. I have a Little Nipper rat trap that gives similar ineffective results, and I am going to place it next to this one for a comparison test.
